New air quality monitor at Providenciales Landfill, crucial step for environmental safety says Minister Kyle R. Knowles
Knowles stated this in a recent exclusive interview with The SUN, explaining that the newly installed air quality monitoring device will serve a crucial role in tracking and collecting data on air quality in and around the landfill, as well as in the broader community.
“This data will help us to analyze critically and make decisions effectively in addressing any air quality concerns as we seek to improve the overall health and safety of residents,” said Minister Knowles.
The Environmental Health Department within the Ministry of Health and Human Services will oversee the collection and dissemination of the air quality data. This ensures that the community remains well-informed about environmental conditions and their potential impacts.
Minister Knowles commended the efforts of the Environmental Health Department and the Ministry of Health and Human Services, emphasizing their dedication to safeguarding public health and the environment.
The installation of the air quality monitoring device comes in response to longstanding concerns from residents about the pollutants they might be inhaling due to the proximity of the dump to surrounding communities. The device will monitor key pollutants such as ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. This data will be compared against World Health Organization (WHO) air quality standards and made publicly accessible, offering transparency and reassurance to residents.
Two air quality monitors have been installed at the entrance of the landfill site and became fully operational on July 23, 2024. The Environmental Health Department will collect and analyze air quality data daily, ensuring residents of the Wheeland Community are adequately informed.
The dissemination of this information is still being fine-tuned to ensure effective communication with all surrounding communities. Minister Knowles assured that the Environmental Health Department, as the lead government agency, would handle the collection and sharing of this data.
In cases where the air quality data indicates unsafe levels of pollutants, the Environmental Health Department will advise on necessary protocols. The Ministry of Health and Human Services has been a driving force behind this initiative, with plans to install additional air quality monitoring devices in other areas of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Recent efforts to extinguish fire hotspots at the landfill have already positively impacted air quality. A phase two of this exercise is planned to continue proactive measures. A comprehensive communication strategy is being developed to educate the public about air quality issues and how to interpret the data provided. Regular reports and updates will be made available to the community to ensure transparency.
The new monitoring capabilities align with the broader environmental policies and goals set by the government, aiming to provide the best quality of life for citizens of the Turks and Caicos Islands. While no immediate health advisories or guidelines have been issued, the Environmental Health Department will provide further details on health impacts, technology specifications, and comparisons to previous monitoring methods.
This initiative underscores the commitment of the Ministry of Public Safety and Utilities and the Ministry of Health and Human Services to protect public health and ensure a sustainable future for all residents.
