Impact of Environmental Factors on Healthy Aging: Behavioral Pathways and Health Outcomes

The aging population is growing globally, making healthy aging a critical public health goal. Emerging evidence suggests that various external environmental factors, such as air pollution, heat exposure, green space availability, and noise, can significantly influence health-related behaviors, including physical activity and sleep patterns. These behaviors, in turn, play a vital role in determining the health outcomes of older adults, potentially affecting the prevalence of chronic diseases, frailty, mental health conditions, overall quality of life and even death.

This Research Topic aims to explore the intricate and multifaceted relationships between environmental factors, health-related behaviors, and healthy aging. By examining these connections, we seek to deepen the understanding of how modifiable external conditions can support or hinder healthy aging processes and contribute to the development of effective interventions and public health strategies.

We encourage scientists to contribute with the following article types: original research, review, mini-review, systematic reviews, perspective, and opinion. Contributions are welcomed regarding one, but not limited to, the following research fields:

• The influence of air pollution on physical activity and sleep patterns in older adults.
• The impact of heat exposure on health-related behaviors and its role in chronic disease development among the elderly.
• The role of green spaces in promoting physical activity, reducing stress, and enhancing mental well-being in aging populations.
• The effects of noise pollution on sleep quality, mental health, and cognitive decline in older individuals.
• Interactions between environmental factors and genetic predispositions in the context of healthy aging.
• Development of public health strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of environmental factors on aging populations.
• Novel interventions aimed at improving health-related behaviors and outcomes in the context of environmental challenges.
