Heston Blumenthal in tears on The One Show as he issues emotional health update | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal was visibly moved to tears as he opened up about his struggle with bipolar disorder on The One Show.
During an intimate discussion, BBC hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas gave Heston the floor to discuss the emotional rollercoaster he has experienced. The heartfelt revelation came during Tuesday’s episode, where Heston disclosed how his wife, Melanie Ceysson, played a pivotal role in getting him the necessary support after noticing “extremes” in his behaviour.
Heston bravely confessed that his condition became clearer to him last year following his diagnosis with bipolar disorder, which, as per NHS information, is characterized by significant mood swings.
In a touching moment with his wife Melanie in the broadcasted segment, Heston recounted: “These recurring highs to lows were getting stronger and stronger and more regular.”
Melanie, reflecting on her husband’s struggles, likened them to a “tornado”.
Continuing his story, Heston said: “I was on a massive high and had been for several days…” But emotion overcame him before he could finish.
The segment went on to reveal his battles with paranoia and suicidal thoughts. Melanie detailed the critical point when she decided to act. She said: “You were a danger to yourself, it’s when I pushed the red button.”
Following this, Heston revealed the tough choice Melanie made to have him sectioned under mental health care. Viewers at home watched the poignant scenes and quickly took to social media to express their solidarity with Heston.
One social media user penned: “Good to see Heston Blumenthal and his partner covering their lived experiences of his Bi-Polar on the One show.”
Meanwhile, another viewer expressed: “Wow. Heston Blumenthal was sectioned last year because his bipolar disorder got out of control. Brave of someone with his reputation to be so honest about it.”
Recounting his experience, Heston revealed: “I realise now looking back at that it’s horrible for people that care about you.”
Turning to his wife as he brushed away her tears, he confessed: “At the end of the day, you saved my life.”
