Funding cuts threaten closure of local mental health transitional support services – CentralAlbertaOnline.com

The Ponoka Rising Sun Clubhouse (PRSC) is facing closure due to provincial funding cuts.
The PRSC provides transitional support for patients who have been discharged from the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury (CCMHBI) through recreational, educational, nutritional, and emotional support programing.
On Feb. 14, the board of directors received a notice of termination for the PRSC contract effective April 30 from Recovery Alberta.
“We’re very concerned for the well-being of this vulnerable population, should the clubhouse be forced to close its doors and the impact that it will have on our community,” said Christine MacNeill, chair for the PRSC board of directors.
The board is now working to reinstate the contract and encouraging the community to advocate for the continued funding of the program to elected representatives, including Premier Danielle Smith, Jennifer Johnson Lacombe-Ponoka MLA, Dan Williams Minister of Mental Health and Addiction, and Jason Nixon Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services.
Amanda Henderson-Kada, PRSC executive director said the clubhouse has received an outpour of community support, with individuals writing letters to government officials, and starting a signature campaign throughout local businesses.
“People are very concerned about this,” said Johnson. “It’s a critical agency in the community. One that’s been there for 30 years transitioning patients back into meaningful employment and quality of life, and we want to see that continue.”
Going forward, Johnson is working with the board of directors, and provincial and municipal representatives to advocate for uninterrupted funding for the agency.
In a statement to Central Alberta Online Recovery Alberta said, “Recovery Alberta reviews programs, services, and contracts to ensure they are being delivered efficiently and effectively. Ongoing reviews ensure public funding is maximized on outcomes that meet the needs of Albertans.
“Various community social programs and services continue to be available in Ponoka and the area. Anyone needing support navigating mental health supports can contact 211 or the mental health line at 1-877-303-2642.”
