February is the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day, a time when we enjoy showing love to others through acts of kindness or with gifts like flowers, candy, or cards. We often go the extra mile to express our love and care for those around us.

However, in the process, we tend to forget the one person who needs our love the most: ourselves. We often put ourselves last because we’re too busy or focused on taking care of others and we find ourselves often at the bottom of our to-do lists, buried beneath a long list of responsibilities — taking care of our kids, grocery shopping, preparing meals, helping friends and family, handling work duties, managing household chores, or running to kids’ sports and doctor appointments.

We put caring for ourselves on hold because there just doesn’t seem to be enough time. At the end of the day, we’re left feeling tired, drained, and stressed. Neglecting our own well-being can result in mental distress, emotional burnout, physical exhaustion, and even illness. That’s why it’s crucial to stop, show ourselves some love, and make self-care a top priority.

The best way to love and care for ourselves is by prioritizing our own needs. When we take care of ourselves, we boost our mental and emotional health, making us more resilient when we experience stress or life’s challenges. By loving and caring for ourselves, we also become better equipped to meet the needs of others. It’s about honoring, nurturing, and protecting ourselves so that we feel good on the inside. When we cultivate love and peace within ourselves, it naturally extends to those around us. The more we love ourselves, the more capable we are of showing love to others.

Loving ourselves means we let go of unrealistic expectations and the pressure to be perfect. It’s about accepting ourselves as we are, without comparing ourselves to the past, “What could have happened if only … ” or “I need to be the same size as I was when I was 25” or “Why did I make that choice.”

Loving ourselves also involves self-care, nurturing our mind, body, and spirit, and doing what’s necessary to feel recharged, strong, and resilient. It’s about setting aside time to refresh and decompress, to improve the quality of our lives. We need to realize that, taking care of ourselves isn’t selfish — it’s essential. One might read this and say “But I don’t have time!” The great thing about self-care is that it doesn’t need to be time-consuming or expensive, but it can make a huge difference in our mental and emotional well-being.

Here are some ways we can start showing ourselves some more love and care:

• Prioritize Physical Health: When we focus on fueling our bodies with proper nutrition that supports our bodies, we feel better. Eating a balanced diet that includes whole foods and staying hydrated, gives us energy and supports our health. Exercise is another important act of self-love. Engaging in activities that we enjoy makes us feel good. Physical activity such as yoga, walking in nature, playing a sport, dancing, or weight training, improves our moods, boosts energy, and strengthens our body.

• Get Proper Sleep: Our bodies need rest to repair, heal, and function properly. Aim to get 7–9 hours of quality sleep by having a good sleep routine. This includes: limiting screen time before bed, creating a calm environment, and practicing relaxation techniques like meditation or breathing.

• Mental Health Reset: Taking time to pause, reflect, and restore our mental health is vital for finding balance and clarity. Practicing daily habits such as mindfulness, meditation, and journaling, allows us to connect with ourselves, reduce stress, and cultivate a sense of inner peace. Seeking support from others, such as therapy or counseling, is another way to practice self-love for our mental health.

• Cultivate Gratitude: Taking time each day to reflect on the things we are grateful for, such as our health, our loved ones, or our accomplishments, shifts our focus from a lack mentality to an abundance mindset.

• Positive Self-Talk: When we practice positive self-talk and avoid negative internal dialog, we give ourselves encouragement to keep moving toward our goals and aspirations. We should treat ourselves with the same kindness and compassion we would offer to a best friend as we are all worthy of love, respect, and care.

• Set Boundaries: Protecting our time and energy is crucial. It communicates that our needs deserve respect and that our well-being is a priority. Setting boundaries ensures that we have the time and energy for ourselves and the things that matter most to us.

• Embrace Ourselves: It’s important to take time to reflect on the qualities that make us unique and special. Creating a list of the traits we love and respect about ourselves can be a powerful practice. This helps to shine the light on the attributes that define us and help us to celebrate who we truly are, which inspires us and strengthens our self-worth.

• Forgive and Let Go: One of the greatest expressions of self-love is the ability to forgive ourselves. We all make mistakes and face setbacks. Rather than holding onto guilt or shame, we release the need to be perfect and practice self-compassion. We can accept ourselves for the choices we made, rather than punish ourselves.

• Create More Joy and Play: Taking time to engage in positive, uplifting experiences that bring us joy and happiness, can help to reduce stress, increase satisfaction with life, and improve mental and emotional health. Allowing ourselves to play, to laugh, and to find joy in the small, everyday moments of life is one of the best ways we can love ourselves.

• Spend Time Around Supportive and Positive People: You deserve to be uplifted by those around you. When you feel love and support from others, it’s easier to give those same things to yourself. If you find the people around you leave you stressed, drained and depressed, it may be time to reevaluate your relationships. It’s not rude or selfish to protect your mental health and well-being — even if it means distancing yourself from certain people.

• Set Boundaries: When you don’t have healthy boundaries, it’s easier to get taken advantage of. For example, if your boss thinks you’re available to work 24 hours a day, or your partner thinks you’re OK with handling all of the chores, it can cause you to feel resentful and angry. Be willing to speak up, say no and share when you feel like your boundaries aren’t being respected.

In closing, loving ourselves is the foundation of our health and well-being. When we take small, mindful steps to care for our spirit, mind, and body, we create a life that is full of vitality, peace, and joy. Remember that self-love isn’t selfish — it’s essential.
